San Diego Is Becoming a Serious Medtech Design Hub
San Diego has been building toward this moment for a long time. The combination of UCSD, Scripps Research, the Salk Institute, a deep defense and aerospace engineering talent base, and proximity to major health systems has been creating the conditions for a serious medtech cluster for decades. What is different now is the pace of commercialization.
In the last three years, San Diego has seen a meaningful increase in Series A and Series B medtech rounds, a growing number of FDA clearances from companies headquartered here, and a notable shift in how design talent is thinking about the region as a place to build a career. That last point matters more than people give it credit for.
Why Geography Still Matters in Medtech
There is a recurring argument in startup culture that geography is irrelevant, that distributed teams and remote work have made physical clusters obsolete. In most software categories, that argument has some merit. In medtech, it does not hold up.
Medical device development requires iterative physical prototyping, hands-on human factors testing, access to clinical environments for validation, and regulatory expertise that is hard to develop in isolation. We work with hardware companies across the country, but our concentration of medtech clients in the San Diego region has grown in the last two years. Part of that is inbound. What I notice about the San Diego medtech companies we work with is that they tend to be technically sophisticated and design-naive at the same time. They have strong clinical and engineering foundations. They have been less focused on what the product experience communicates to the end user, whether that is a patient, a clinician, or a procurement committee.
That gap is closing. The companies coming out of San Diego now are asking design questions earlier. They are treating industrial design as a strategic input rather than a production step. That shift is a signal of market maturity.

Any serious design and engineering hub needs to solve for talent density. San Diego has historically lost engineering and design talent to the Bay Area and Los Angeles. That pattern is changing.
The cost dynamics have shifted. San Francisco and Los Angeles are significantly more expensive than San Diego for early-stage companies trying to attract and retain senior technical talent. The quality of life argument for San Diego has always been strong. The career trajectory argument is getting stronger as the local ecosystem produces more successful companies and the network effects deepen.
Industrial design talent in medtech is specifically underdeveloped as a category nationally. The number of designers with genuine expertise in FDA-regulated product development is small relative to demand. San Diego’s combination of medical device company density and proximity to design programs at UCSD and ArtCenter creates conditions where that talent can develop and stay.

The relationships you build with clinical partners, the manufacturing connections you develop with local CMOs, the regulatory expertise you access through the local professional network: these are durable advantages.
The design side of that equation is worth more attention than most founding teams give it. The companies that have succeeded in translating San Diego’s technical depth into commercially differentiated products have consistently done so by making design a first-class discipline, not a finishing layer. The ones that treat design as decoration tend to build products that work and still struggle commercially.
